Indian Jewish
Heritage Center

Happy Hanukkah! In this joyous Festival of Lights and dedication, we would like to present some notable personalities, whom with their luminescence have warmed many a heart in our community. In addition, you will find a review of two interesting books recently published, a documented list of synagogues and prayer halls in India, Burma and Pakistan. Included are two reports with photographs from the Shaul Sapir lecture (12.11.14), and the Ohel David Synagogue, Pune commemoration (02.11.14). We wish you now and always – "the strength and faith to light a candle in the darkness."

We warmly welcome you to our website.

This concept of the Indian Jewish Heritage Center has been in our hearts for a long time and has specially preoccupied our minds in the last decade.

As a senior member of the Indian Jewish community living in Israel, I helplessly observe the slipping sands of the hour glass that pauses for no one. Our rich Indian Jewish heritage slowly becomes a memory as our present generation passes on. Therefore it is now that we have to take a united stance to help preserve our Indian Jewish legacy, because later is too late.

”India” nursed the Jewish communities as family – to which we are forever indebted to. Without the threat of anti-Semitism the Jewish communities in and around Bombay, Cochin and Calcutta flourished and blossomed. Sadly, the current Jewish presence in most of these cities and towns is dwindling and sparse. The doors of the mighty and vibrant synagogues remain locked and its wooden windows shuttered. The Bima stands vacant, and empty benches that I used to once share with my father and brothers on Fridays, Saturday mornings and festivals, today lie dusty and undisturbed. As the anonymous throngs walk past these grand edifices to a community long gone, they remain unknowing of the rich and vibrant community that once thrived there.

Our generation is the last living link to the Indian Jewish past, and before this link is forever lost we must take steps to preserve the memories of our Indian Jewish ancestry. The members and friends of the IJHC have one common, loving and almost sacred path – the preservation of the memory of our Indian Jewish past. Irrespective of our heritage, be it the Bnei Israel community, or the Cochin community, or the Baghdadi communities of Calcutta and Bombay, we were all mothered in India, and fathered by Abraham. It is with one common and united communal effort that we now embark upon this endeavor for the sake of our forefathers, for the present generation, and for our promising future generations.

Memories, history, loved ones, and generations are silently slipping into the sunset. We don’t have a second to lose. You, the living and present Indian Jewish Individual is partner to an almost-sacred task of preserving our Indian Jewish heritage before it’s too late.

We are a voluntary nonprofit organization with only one dedication in our hearts – and that is preserving the united Indian Jewish Heritage. We welcome you to join us in this collective effort.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Moses
Co Chairman

Appeal

In a land where empires rose, flourished and collapsed, dynasties rose in authority and vanished, yet the Jews of India continued to lead a life unmolested by religious bigotry.

The Indian Jewish Heritage Center was formed with the noble task of preserving the heritage of all Indian Jews. The Bene Israel community, the Cochin community, the Baghdad community, and the Bnei Menashe community, each have their own unique customs and traditions.

The Indian Jewish Heritage Center is registered as a non-profit organization and the volunteers are striving to preserve the rich heritage of the Indian Jews. Our team is supported by people from all over Israel and the world. We have successfully presented a series of lectures and a number of culturally entertaining events on the different communities.

We are addressing all well-wishers, organizations, associations, and friends to help support us in this much needed endeavor.
